Assistive Technology in Mobile Devices

February 21, 2017

Apple (iOS) and Android devices have built-in AT features.
These built-in AT tools come with the device. You don’t have to buy special apps to use them.

As app developer for the cultural sector we work hard to have our apps support built-in Assistive Technology (AT) features of mobile devices.

iOS has two text-to-speech (TTS) options that are useful for anyone with reading or visibility issues. Similarly, TalkBack is a screen reading feature of Android that uses TTS technology to read aloud text.

There are many more AT features but they vary depending on the device’s operating system. Understood.org posted a helpful article on how to use some of the more common AT tools on both iOS and Android. Although the article is geared towards children and school learning most AT features can be used by everyone.
