Country: USA
Year Founded: 1988
Type of Institution: Historic and Heritage
Website: https://www.easternstate.org

Opened in October 1829 and known for the introduction of the “Pennsylvania System” which incarcerated prisoners separately. At the time it was believed a system of solitary confinement would encourage prisoners to be penitent and encourage them to reform. After 1971, the building no longer functioned as a prison. The Eastern State Penitentiary is now open daily to the public where they can tour the building, see the exhibits and learn about its history including some notorious inmates such as Al Capone.
