The Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens is a private non-profit institution, founded in 1919 by businessman Henry E. Huntington. The library contains over 6 million items including books on British and American history and literature, including early Shakespeare works and Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales.. It is also one of the most renowned centres of study of the American West. In addition, the gallery houses an art collection spanning 18th and 19th century European art and 17th – mid 20th century American art. The gardens cover 120 acres of landscaped grounds.
