The house was built in 1924 in Utrecht by the Dutch architect Gerrit Rietveld. He was commissioned to design a house without walls, to create a connection between the inside and the outside space. The house was used as a normal residence until the death of the owner in 1985. It was later restored and is now a museum open to the public.
