Following its 1980 eruption, Mount St. Helens was established as a US National Monument within the Gifford Pinchot National Forest. The park’s 500,000 visitors a year can traverse more than 500 miles of trails, explore the history of the mountain at visitor centers, and enjoy climbing, horseback riding, fishing, and wildlife viewing in the naturally recovering landscape.
