The Basilica of Saint Mary Major is the largest Catholic Marian Church in Rome. The original building work started around 432 AD. The design reflects Roman architecture and further works were incorporated in the Baroque style. Within the church are mosaics showing the earliest known depictions of the Virgin Mary and other mosaics on the Triumphal Arch show scenes from the life of Christ and the Virgin Mary. The church also contains many other treasures including notable works of art.
