Children become curators in our newly award-winning multimedia tour for the Picture Gallery in Park Sanssouci
Established nearly 50 years ago, the German Design Awards honour the most innovative ideas and design work across industries and across the world.
Today, the highly-respected German Design Council which runs the awards, bestowed Antenna with the 2018 award for Excellent Communications Design in Apps for our interactive multimedia tour of the Picture Gallery in Park Sanssouci in Potsdam.
Using sophisticated technology but designed to mirror its historic surroundings, the tour is one of the most interactive gallery experiences in the country. Visitors between the ages of six and ten are guided by a custom app on an iPad mini through the hall, which houses European masterpieces from Caravaggio, Rubens and many more.
Lively characters come to life on screen and tell stories about the setting and the works. Meaningful games and quizzes, that have been designed to be used intuitively, encourage young people to look deeper into the paintings – asking questions and revealing unexpected surprises.
At one point, young visitors can reimagine the gallery by reorganising the pieces into their own gallery. At another, when viewing a piece of art that uses light cleverly, visitors can choose different virtual light sources to see how this alters the expression of the man in the picture and the mood of the painting itself. It’s a truly unique and exciting experience.
One of the team behind the tour is Eva Wesemann, Director of Creative Strategy EMEA at Antenna: “In our experience, children want to learn and understand more about art. But they want to do so in a fun and enjoyable way. They want to be transported and inspired.
“Using the latest technology and design language, we worked with the Foundation of Prussian Palaces and Gardens Berlin, Potsdam and Brandenburg to create something truly special at the Picture Gallery.
“It’s incredible seeing the energized reaction from young visitors and now for it to be recognised with such a prestigious award.”
