On Wednesday, April 26, thirty-two New York City institutions join forces for #MuseumInstaSwap. Showcasing the breadth and depth of art institutions across the city, this digital initiative encourages participating institutions to draw parallels between each other’s themes and exhibitions.
I’m not usually inclined towards superlatives and caps lock, but I LOVE this. This week, museums across New York paired up for an initiative dubbed #MuseumInstaSwap.
The event first took place in London, last year, and involves 2 cultural institutions each visiting their selected counterpart to take photographs that ‘resonate with their own collections, exhibitions, and themes’.
I think pretty much everything about this is brilliant: it builds and strengthens networks between institutions; particular artefacts and works of art suddenly reach new digital audiences; and people – both within and outside the institutions – can gain new perspectives and experiences.
If you get chance, check out the hashtag on Instagram – it’s a fascinating and provocative glimpse into New York’s cultural scene.
