Instagram As Gallery: #LACMAInstaResidency

I will be using LACMA’s Instagram platform to show and talk about art in a different way, beginning with my personal take, then offering the platform to the public for an open discussion. I want to have conversations about art with people from different backgrounds, and Instagram is an ideal place for that. It’s where we will all intersect and have dialogue around artworks inside and outside of museums.

Museums and art galleries are no strangers to social media these days; many institutions’ accounts are must-follows for me, regularly putting out content and posts that give me a quick cultural fix throughout the day.

Many use the platform to showcase their collections or events to a wider audience, but this is the first time I’ve seen somewhere give over their social media to an actual artist, as a platform for an entirely new artistic experience for such a long period of time.

For 6 weeks, artist Guadalupe Rosales is to become LACMA’s first ever ‘Instagram Artist in Residence’. She hopes to open up new conversations about art, and people’s experiences around it, encouraging that there’s no right or wrong way to do so.

I can’t wait to see how this new kind of artist residency plays out, and look forward to seeing the conversations and debates it prompts.
