“I suggested the word ‘inclusion’ for the job title based on a survey of multiple professional associations, and of the museum field. Inclusion focuses on an outcome. It’s not only about museums getting an assortment of people, but also making sure that multiple perspectives get a voice – in the collections, in the exhibitions, in the community outreach, and, yes, in the staff and boardroom, too.”
I’ve been advocating a long time, along with a lot of my colleagues in the field, that we use the word “Inclusion” instead of “Access.” It’s a subtle shift, but one that’s similar to changing from “Learning” to “Engagement.” Happy to see the AAM just created a national position for this important work, and appointed Dr. Nicole Ivy as “Director of Inclusion.” Looking forward to her leadership. I like her thinking so far.
