The project, which has taken three years to complete, aims to create a visual dialogue between art and nature – the figures helping to form part of an artificial reef which will act as a breeding site for local species of fish and plants.
My blood runs saltier than most; I have seawater in my veins. Growing up in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, the ocean was my playground. This Underwater Museum, which just opened on the seabed floor off the Canary Islands, is the newest addition to a hauntingly beautiful array of swimmable installations by British artist Jason deCaires Taylor (the others are off the coasts of Mexico and Granada). What a beautiful way to create experiential art that also serves as activism. I keep thinking about the possibilities for audio, how that could add yet another dimension to this experience. I wonder what it would take gear-wise? Headphones embedded in your facemask? Bone conduction through your mouthpiece regulator? Oh the possibilities!
