A quick sampling of the country’s largest and most visited collections reveals that the Museum of Modern Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and the National Gallery of Art, among others, have never had female directors, even if some of those museums have had women serve as president or chief financial officers.
I wrote this last week, but saved it for International Women’s Day. I spend alot of time interacting with a cross-section of Museum staffers all over the country, as we work to develop audioguides, apps, multimedia experiences, etc. 75% of the people that I partner with are female – curators, education directors, interpretive media specialists, front-line visitor services managers, outreach and volunteer coordinators, Access advocates, etc. As the Met undergoes their search for a new Director, I can’t help but wonder – why are these dedicated, brilliant, dynamic women who are “down in the ranks” and doing incredible work not rising to executive leadership positions? Liza Oliver’s article is exactly on point.
