“Algorithms are often elegant and incredibly useful tools used to accomplish tasks. They are mostly invisible aids, augmenting human lives in increasingly incredible ways. However, sometimes the application of algorithms created with good intentions leads to unintended consequences.”
Algorithms are aimed at optimizing everything. They can save lives, make things easier and conquer chaos. An algorithm provides ‘the best’ route through a city or even a building. And an algorithm can select ‘the most important’ art of a museum. Or can it?
In my personal experience, trusting on an algorithm too much means that we may be exposed to ‘filter bubbles’ and lose creativity’. Worse of all we’ll miss the serendipity.
Just walking around in a city – or a museum for that matter – offers a lot of unexpected encounters and new information. If guided by some smart algorithm, someone else has already made decisions for you. Is that what you want? Think again 🙂
