Royal Academy of Arts Exceptional Exhibition Content

Client profile
Focusing on British art and artists from the 18th century to the present day, the Royal Academy of Arts is a unique privately funded, artist-led institution that includes a museum, art school, and fine arts library. In addition to a collection that boasts masterpieces by John Constable, historic objects like Queen Victoria’s paintbox, and modern-day creations, the RA offers a host of exhibitions including the annual Summer Exhibition featuring emerging and established artists.
The Royal Academy of Arts hosts a variety of high-profile exhibitions throughout each year and has an ongoing need for updated tour content.
Quality, consistency and currency are critical elements of an Academy tour, necessary to meet the high standards of Friends of the Academy, many of whom visit regularly. With varying sizes in gallery space, it’s important for the Royal Academy to work hands-on with a tour content provider in developing content to tailor content to meet the needs of the unique museum space.
Lastly, all main tour content must also be provided as complimenting visually-impaired tours for sight-disabled members.
The Royal Academy has happily worked with Antenna International since 1998producing up to four multi-media or audio tours each year.
Antenna collaborates closely with the museum to understand and maximise the visitor experience. The process begins with a kick-off meeting with an Antenna Account Manager, followed by brainstorms with museum curators, curatorial assistants, operations managers, and licensing people to identify key messages and scenes to be highlighted in the tour. The choice of content type – audio, video or multi-media – is based on the artworks themselves. Exhibition themes are incorporated into the tour content to create a seamless and immersive visitor experience.
Logistics are also considered. If the artwork is being presented in a smaller gallery, the tour efficiently directs visitorsaround the space to aid with the management of overall museum guest traffic.
In addition to the standard tours, a unique visually impaired tour is created for each new exhibition, focusing on a curated selection of six or more key works.
Antenna has had major success with their most recent audio and multimedia content for the MatisseJasper Johns, Russian Revolution and America AftertheFall exhibitions. Visitors and Friends of the Royal Academy have been very pleased with their experience:
  • “For someone curious about Art but not at all knowledgeable the audio guide made each painting interesting and will help my appreciation of art elsewhere.” Visitor, Stratford-upon-Avon, U.K.
  • “Struck lucky as the Dali/Deuchamp opened on the day of visit. Also saw Matisse and Jasper Johns. All very well curated and good notes to help you get more from the visit. The audio guide for Jasper Johns was excellent.” Visitor, Manchester, U.K.
  • “Exhibition: America after the fall Painting in the 1930’s. Do not miss this art exhibition on the 2nd floor. It is worth seeing. Also, don’t forget to rent an audio guide. Everything is explained with simple but meaningful words.” Visitor, Athens, Greece
  • “Great exhibition. Extremely well set out and some amazing pieces on show. Highly educational and would recommend you take advantage of the audio guide. It will most definitely come in hand.”  Visitor, London, U.K.
